About me
I’ve been making pottery for almost two decades, including three years as the lead Design Ceramicist for Dumae, a high-end ceramics brand in the Arts District of LA. I also have a Masters of Science in Education from Johns Hopkins University, and am a former classroom teacher. My experience has refined my artistic sensibility and technical know-how, and also given me the vocabulary and instructional framework needed to effectively share my knowledge and excitement with others.
As an artist, I have always been interested in the intersection of form and function. Pursuing the simple beauty that naturally emerges from necessity — the elegance of solutions born from long experience — I believe in letting purpose and process shine through to the end product, seeking to highlight in my pieces the materials and methods used to create them. My wholehearted conviction: whether exposed beams in a ceiling, bright spoon drags of sauce on a plate, or visible seams in ceramic vases, artifacts of method are witness to the creative process, and offer a raw and beautiful window into it.
As an educator, my sensibilities are much the same. Process should be transparent. Method and outcome should be clearly linked. Showing your work is celebrated. Most importantly, I understand that learning, like art, is an iterative process. Every student’s journey is different, and every step along the way is an accomplishment.
